Firefighter Hiring Process 

Becoming a Fremont Firefighter takes time and investment from both the candidate and our Department. Because of these efforts, the hiring process takes about six months.

Mask upGenerally, an applicant goes through the following 11-step process:

  1. Pass the FCTC’s Written Exam
    • Study for the FCTC’s Written Exam! Consisting of 100 questions, this test is designed to demonstrate your ability to think critically and process information. To register or see upcoming testing dates, please visit: https://www.fctconline.org/.
  2. Obtain a Successful Placement on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List
  3. Submit a City of Fremont Employment Application
    • Start your application process by submitting your job application. Before submitting, check to make sure that you meet the basic position requirements.
  4. Interview with an Oral Board
    • We want to learn more about you through an interview with an Oral Board Panel.  
  5. Receive an interview with the Fire Chief and a Conditional Job Offer
    • Pending any outstanding test results or documentation, you'll interview with the Fire Chief and Deputy Chiefs. Following the interview, you may receive a Conditional Job Offer as a Firefighter Recruit.
  6. Complete a Comprehensive Background Investigation
    • A complete, extensive public safety background investigation is conducted to ensure our candidates are fit to become Firefighters.
  7. Complete a Board Psychiatric Evaluation
    • Designed to determine if you're mentally fit enough to be a firefighter, be honest, thorough, and authentic with your replies.
  8. Complete a Comprehensive Physical Exam
    • After completing your psychiatric evaluation, an in-depth medical examination will be administered to ensure you are able to perform the duties of a firefighter.
  9. Receive a Non-conditional Job Offer
    • At this point, there are no pending test results; the Department sees the potential in you and wants you to be part of the organization. 
  10. Be Admitted into the Fremont Fire Department Recruit Academy
    • Congratulations! You are officially on your way to becoming a Fremont Firefighter.
